Tips to consider before going on vacation

Many homeowners are going to hit the road this upcoming summer to enjoy a vacation away from their homes – whether it’s visiting family, heading to the beach, or going to a national park or camping trip. The last thing any homeowner would want is to get back from a trip and find a flooded basement – or worse! Taking a few extra steps before you leave home will ensure that you have peace-of-mind on your vacation as well as potentially avoid costly damage to your home.

Here are some easy tips to get your home vacation ready:

Turn Off Your Main Water Shut-Off Valve

If you are going to be away from home for several days, it is always a good idea to shut off your main water shut-off valve. By turning off your main shut-off valve, you are preventing water from entering your home in the event of a burst pipe, water heater or hidden leak.

Adjust Your Thermostat

If everyone is out of the home while you are on vacation, there is no reason to keep your thermostat running. Your thermostat can be set anywhere from 72 degrees to 90 degrees and will help you save on energy costs. Please be mindful if you are leaving pets in the home.

Unplug Major Appliances

Before leaving for vacation, make a thorough sweep of your home and unplug every unnecessary appliance and electronic. This includes the television, lamps, electronic razors, entertainment centers, computers, microwaves and digital clocks. These appliances drain energy when plugged in and unplugging them will not only save money but could also eliminate the chance of an electrical fire should there be a power surge while no one is at home.
